What happened in season 1?

The HBO synopsis of the season reads: “Set in 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire, and inspired by a remarkable true story, this drama series follows the charismatic Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) as she attempts to revitalize her inherited home—and marry a wealthy heiress (Sophie Rundle).”

Ann left Hastings heartbroken and heads to the luxurious landscape of Halifax, West Yorkshire, to restore her uncle’s estate she she has inherited.

While she is restoring the estate she finds that the family land as a coal mine and finds that its being stolen by two brothers.

The new landowner encounters a potentially dangerous romance with another woman, while she records a cryptic dairy that no one can decade.
