THE BILL icon Ben Roberts has died aged 70.
Here’s everything you need to know about the man who played Chief Inspector Derek Conway in the police drama for 13 years.
Who was Ben Roberts?
Ben Roberts, born on July 1, 1950, was a British actor.
He is best known for playing CI Derek Conway in The Bill between 1987 and 2000, at the height of the show’s popularity.
Ben had previously appeared in several TV shows, including The Professionals and Doctor Who.
The copper was briefly promoted to acting superintendent during the mid-nineties before returning to his rank after a two-year stint.
Derek was killed off the show in spectacular fashion when a petrol bomb was thrown into his police car.
The Bill ran on ITV between 1983 and 2010.
Ben continued to have a career in acting after his dramatic end in the police drama, appearing in Casualty and Doctors.
He also went on to feature on the silver screen, making his film debut in 2010 comedy drama Another Year alongside Iris star Jim Broadbent.
Ben’s biggest movie role came in Jane Eyre, where he played Briggs alongside Michael Fassbender and Judi Dench.
His final on-screen appearance came in the 2019 Danish biopic Daniel.
What was Ben Roberts’ cause of death?
Ben’s cause of death is yet to be made public.
The actor’s passing was confirmed by his agents LCM on Wednesday, June 9.
The statement read: “Remembering the wonderful Ben Roberts who sadly passed away on Monday.
“Best known as Chief Inspector Derek Conway in The Bill & he had an extensive career in theatre, TV & film.
“Our thoughts are with his wife Helen & family at this time.”
Fans have been paying tribute to the late star on Twitter, with one writing: “RIP Ben Roberts, a great actor and very underrated.”
Another wrote: “Conway was one of the best characters on TV ever.”
