THIS Is Going To Hurt is the new BBC One international co-produced drama TV series based on Adam Kay’s memoir during his time on the NHS frontline.
The writer has since toured the country following the success of his book, and it has now been adapted for the small screen.
When is This Is Going To Hurt on the BBC?
This is Going to Hurt will premiere on Tuesday February 8 at 9pm on BBC One.
The series was originally meant to consist of eight 45-minute episodes – but it has now been cut down to seven, as well as shifted from BBC Two to BBC One.
All aired episodes will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
What is the NHS drama about?
The new BBC Drama is based on the real-life experiences Adam Kay experienced during his time on the NHS frontline, which he documented in his book of the same name.
First commissioned back in July 2018, the series will likely resonate with viewers following the global pandemic we are experiencing.
The series is set on a labour ward which showcases the highs and lows of the gruelling 97-hour weeks and the toll of which being a junior doctor can take home with them.
The official synopsis for the series says: “At times hilarious, at times devastating, This is Going to Hurt is a series following Adam, a doctor who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy.
“Junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities.
“Adam is clinging to his personal life as he is increasingly overwhelmed by stresses at work: the 97-hour weeks, the life and death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.”
Creator and writer Adam Kay said: “Junior doctors tend to have a rather quiet voice compared to the politicians, which is understandable – you don’t have much spare time if you’re working 100 hour weeks.
“It’s been a huge privilege to have my diaries reach so many readers and it’s been absolutely humbling to see their reaction. I’m beyond delighted to now be able to share my story with a far wider audience and make the viewers of BBC Two laugh, cry and vomit.”
Who is in the cast?
Ben Whishaw takes the lead, playing the role of Adam Kay in the series.
He’s joined by newcomer Ambika Mod as Shruti, a young junior doctor just starting in obstetrics and gynaecology who he works closely alongside.
Other cast includes Michele Austin as Tracy, a confident, sharp-witted senior midwife, Alex Jennings as Mr Lockhart, a consultant, and Adam’s domineering boss. Kadiff Kirwan plays Julian, Adam’s colleague and professional rival and Ashley McGuire plays Miss Houghton, a consultant who spots potential in Shruti.
