Why did Mock the Week get cancelled?

The BBC didn’t give a solid reason why Mock the Week is off the screens of Britain.

They stated: “The next series of Mock the Week will be the last, we are really proud of the show but after 21 series we have taken the difficult decision in order to create room for new shows.

“We would like to thank Angst Productions, host Dara O’Briain, panellist Hugh Dennis and all the guest comedians involved in the show across the 21 series.”

Angst Production are the company that created the programme.

They also said: “We’re naturally hugely disappointed that Mock the Week is coming to an end and hope that we will be able to resurface somewhere some day in the future.

“However, the last 17 years on BBC Two have been an absolute blast.

“It’s been a great privilege to work closely with scores of truly incredible performers and we’d also like to take the opportunity to thank the BBC and all our many fans around the world for their support over the years.”

How long was Mock The Week on BBC?

Mock the Week has been on BBC Two for over 17 years, running over 200 episodes.

The last show aired on Friday, October 21, 2022, with comedy guests such as Hugh Dennis, Ahir Sha and Zoe Lyons.

They poked fun at politicians, as always, something that the show was famous for.

Following the resignation of Liz Truss as Prime Minister, Dara could not resist but poke fun at her and the short period she spent in office.

Opening the show, the host said:  “At the time of recording Hunt is still the Chancellor and Truss is still the Prime Minister.

“Of course, just after we recorded this Liz Truss was mounted into a catapult and fired at the sun.”

Guest Rhys James made light at the fact it was the last ever edition of the show and suggested that they play cards instead of what they usually do.

He quipped: : “Sorry, are we seriously going to sit around this whole show talking about the news?

“I just thought as it was the last day we could play board games and stuff – I bought Uno.”

What has host Dara O’Briain said about Mock The Week ending?

Dara O’Briain has been the main host of the show ever since its airing.

With the announcement of the cancellation, he said: “That’s it folks, the UK has finally run out of news.

“The storylines were getting crazier and crazier – global pandemics, divorce from Europe, novelty short-term prime ministers.

“It couldn’t go on.

“And so, regretfully, we are closing the doors on Dara and Hugh’s Academy for Baby Comedians.
