She terminated her pregnancy

BBC One viewers were recently left in tears when Whitney Dean (portrayed by Shona McGarty) decided to terminate her pregnancy.

The market trader had learned her child could die at birth after being diagnosed with Edwards’ syndrome, also known as trisomy 18.

In heart-breaking scenes, Whitney and Zack Hudson (James Farrar) said goodbye to their baby, nicknamed Peach.

Coming up next week, the pair argue about leaving their baby at the hospital but are both shaken when it’s revealed that their daughter’s existence isn’t legally recognised.

The chef later tales solace in the hospital faith room and is agitated by the nonchalant attitude of an expectant father.

He and Whitney then share a tender final moment with little Peach after the later softens to the idea of spending time with her daughter by speaking to Nurse Lynsey.

Both characters say goodbye to their baby once and for all but are set to struggle in the long-run.

As Whitney pushes her loved ones away, leaving Chelsea Fox and Sonia Fowler (respectively played by Zaraah Abrahams and Natalie Cassidy) more determined than ever to be there for her, Zack is desperately trying to come to terms with the loss.

He desperately wants to speak to Whitney but is also rejected, unaware she wants to speak with him too.

Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) tries to encourage her half-brother – but will it work?

In later scenes, Zack watches on as Whitney continues to struggle with her emotions and he has an idea.

He invites her to local wine bar Peggy’s where he offers her some money – but this falls flat with Whitney.

Zack has also been trying to cope with his own health issues as he was diagnosed with HIV.

The heartthrob was urged to get tested by a former acquaintance with whom he shared needles at the gym.

He has been left alone during his ordeal and has had to focus on helping Whitney with her ill-fated pregnancy.

Could it all take a toll on him?

EastEnders airs from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
