THE first black soldier to reach the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major in the Queen’s elite bodyguard has been arrested by the Flying Squad on suspicion of stealing ammunition.
Kirtland Gill, the most senior enlisted soldier in the crack Coldstream Guards, was seized in a raid by firearms officers and the Royal Military Police on Thursday.
It is understood RSM Gill denies any wrong-doing.
The fisherman’s son from Jamaica made headlines when his ground breaking promotion was announced last year.
His commanding officer, Lt Col David Marsham hailed him at the time as a “tried and tested soldier with an immaculate service record”.
Sgt Maj Gill, 40, who met Queen twice in the course of his 20-year career, was one of two serving soldiers arrested at separate addresses in Berkshire on Thursday.
The arrests sent shockwaves through the regiment, whose soldiers guard the Queen at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace.
Sgt Maj Gill, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was working as the regiment’s Quartermaster Sergeant, in charge of supplies, at the time of his arrest.
He was due to take up his new role later this year.
The police said: “Two serving members of the British Army have been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.
“Detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad, supported by the Royal Military Police and Ministry of Defence Police, attended two separate residential addresses in Berkshire
“A man in his 30s and a man in his 40s were arrested on suspicion of possession of ammunition and conspiracy to steal.
“They have been taken to a nearby police station where they remain in custody.”
An MOD Spokesperson said: “We can confirm that two soldiers have been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. We are assisting the Metropolitan Police with their investigation.”
