According to the Mail on Sunday, the nickname came from Meghan’s strength and determination – said to have impressed Prince Charles.

A source told the news outlet: “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy.

“It’s become a term of endearment.”

According to royal commentator Christine-Marie Liwag Dixon, Charles uses the code name affectionately.

Speaking to viewers of The List, she said: “Meghan Markle hasn’t had an easy time of it since joining the Royal Family.

“She has also said that she felt less than at home in the Royal Family.

“The Royal Family may not have approved of Meghan and Harry stepping down as senior royals despite them doing so to escape an environment that was clearly not good for their mental health.

“However it seems that Prince Charles had a lot of respect for Meghan’s resilient nature.”

Christine-Marie continued: “This was evident in the secret nickname he reportedly had for her: ‘Tungsten’.”

Prince Charles and Meghan became quite close with the duchess asking him to walk her down the aisle when her father was forced to pull out of her wedding to Prince Harry.

However, In the CBS Oprah Winfrey interview that was aired to the world in March, Meghan and Harry dropped dramatic bombshell accusations against their family.

Meghan claimed that Archie wasn’t allowed to be a prince after there were “concerns and conversations” about “how dark” his skin would be after he was born.

But the 39-year-old declined to say who had started those conversations, saying it would be “damaging” for them.

Prince Harry said he would “never share” the full details of the discussion but that he was asked at the start of his relationship with Meghan, how dark the skin of their children might be.

But Oprah Winfrey revealed it was not the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh who made the comment about Archie’s skin.

Meghan also said that when she was suffering with suicidal thoughts, the family didn’t allow her to get help.

The couple claimed that Kate Middleton made Meghan cry in a row over a flower girl dress.

Prince Harry also spoke out about how he felt ‘trapped’ in the family and that he and his father weren’t speaking.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now living in a £11million mansion in Santa Barbara, California, and have signed multi-million deals with Netflix and Spotify.

While the choice of Meghan’s nickname may seem odd, the metal does have a number of impressive qualities that could be used to describe the Duchess of Sussex.

Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals in a pure form.

It is also known for its ability to retain its hardness, exceeding many forms of steel.

The metal is generally used to cut tools like knives and drills thanks to its hardness.

It can also be used in light bulbs and rocket engine nozzles.

The rare metal is found naturally on earth – first found in 1781.

The element, known as W, has the atomic number 74.
