A SOLDIER shot his leg off in an alleged bid to get out of a scandal-hit Army unit rocked by allegations of racism, drugs and attempted murder.
Private Carl Windebank had an amputation above the knee after blasting himself at point-blank range.
He was serving with the Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment in Cyprus when he was injured.
Pals said he planned to give himself a flesh wound so he could be medically discharged.
A source claimed he put a tourniquet around his thigh to stem any bleeding but the bullet shattered his kneecap and ricocheted down his calf.
“He was found screaming in pain next to his SA80 rifle.
A source told The Celeb Report: “He is in a really bad state.
“The bullet hit bone and went through the back of his leg and made a really big exit wound.”
Former club-level runner Pte Windebank, 20, of Romsey, Hants, was said to be having work and relationship problems.
It comes after two of the unit’s men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing.
Five men failed drugs tests and officers are investigating allegedly racist graffiti on a black soldier’s car.
