THE appearance of Royal Family members on the Buckingham Palace balcony is an established tradition of the Trooping the Colour.
But in 2022, it will have a slightly different look, after The Queen decided only working royals would appear for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Who are the working royals in the British Royal Family?
“Working royals” are representatives of Her Majesty, and appear on her behalf at official engagements.
This includes going on international tours, hosting state dinners, opening buildings and presenting gongs.
All their expenses – excluding those covered by the Government for things like travel and security – are paid for by the Queen, using income from her private estate, the Duchy of Lancaster.
The most important responsibilities, like receiving heads of state, will likely be performed by direct heirs.

So who are working royals currently?
The Queen
There have been concerns over her health after mobility issues forced her to miss a string of engagements, including the State Opening of Parliament.
But though the Queen has delegated some duties to Prince Charles and Prince William, she continues to carry out royal duties well into her nineties, and will mark 70 years on the throne in 2022.
Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales
Charles is next in line to the throne, and represented the Queen at the State Opening for the first time in May 2022.
He often represents his mother for many of her official duties.
Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall
Camilla Parker Bowles, Charles’ second wife regularly performs duties both on her own and with the prince.
In 2022, Her Majesty confirmed that she would become Queen Consort when Charles takes the throne.
Royal sources said it was the Queen’s wish for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort as recognition for her hard work and the happiness she has brought her son.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
Prince William is second in line to the throne, and he and his wife Kate have taken increased their royal duties on the Queen’s behalf in recent years.
In May 2022, William visited the United Arab Emirates on his grandmother’s behalf, and passed on her condolences following the death of the nation’s ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Anne, the Princess Royal
Anne is the Queen’s only daughter, and is thought to be among the hardest working of the royals.
She’s expected to take over from Prince Harry as Captain General of the Marines in 2022.
She completed a trip to Papua New Guinea and Australia in April, 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Prince Edward and Sophie, The Earl and Countess of Wessex
Prince Edward is the Queen’s youngest son, and he and his wife Sophie have represented her at various events.
They have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
Neither of them are working royals, though both will be present on the balcony during the Trooping of the Colour.
Prince Richard and Birgitte, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester
Prince Richard is the Queen’s first cousin, and though less well-known than the rest of the working royals, he’s been a full-timer for the Royal Family for many years.

Their official residence is at Kensington Place in London.
Along with his wife Birgitte, he attends national and international events in support of the monarch and her duties as Head of State.
