REESE Witherspoon has quietly divorced her husband of twelve years, Jim Toth and the couple may have left fans a series of clues leading up to the split.
The Walk the Line star made the announcement on Friday, March 24, 2023, with a statement on Instagram.

Though the ex-couple handle the separation with as much tact and grace as possible considering Reese’s celebrity, there were signs proceeding the announcement that a divorce with forthcoming.
SOCIAL MEDIA
While Reese, 47, used social media to announce her separation to her fans, and the public at large, it may have also been the biggest clue that the couple was on the rocks.
Besides the fact that the Sweet Home Alabama actress hasn’t been publically photographed with her then-husband since July of 2022, she has also failed to post photos with him online for months.
The last photo posted by Reese that truly featured Jim was posted to her Instagram account 13 weeks ago.
The other was a January 1st, Happy New Year post, that showed the couple standing in silhouette on the beach with their son.
The snapshot was taken during the Christmas season and used to encourage her followers to give back during the holidays.
It was captioned: “It’s the season to give back, donate toys, coats and diapers to local shelters. And also figure out how to wrap awkwardly sized presents together!”
The photo captured Reese at what appeared to be a gift-giving event with Jim and their son, Tennessee James.
The post also included a snap of the 47-year-old and her ex-husband posing with the gifts they brought to the donation event.
DIVIDED ASSETS
According to Us Weekly, the former couple has been preparing for their eventual separation for quite some time as they divided their assets in the years before announcing their split.
An industry insider told the publication: “Reese has spent the last year preparing for the next chapter.”
They continued: “They decided their marriage wasn’t going to last forever and that they should have a plan for splitting up their assets that wouldn’t destroy what they built together.”
One of the several examples provided of their preemptive assets settling was the sale of the media company Hello Sunshine in August of 2021.
Sold for $900million, Reese co-founded the company with Strand Equity managing partner Seth Rodsky in 2016 and it was coowned by Jim.
The insider revealed: “Instead of having to split up a huge company with dozens of employees and several divisions, they have a big pile of money,” before adding, “and there’s plenty for everybody.”
REESE’S STATEMENT
The Legally Blonde actress took to social media to share the news of the divorce.
“We have some personal news to share,” the A-list star began her post on Instagram.
She continued: “It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
She explained that her “biggest priority” is her son and their entire family as they “navigate their next chapter.”
“These matters are never easy and are extremely personal,” the actress said.
JIM TOTH HISTORY
Reese and Jim first met at a party in January of 2010, around the same time the actress had split from Jake Gyllenhaal.
By that February, the two were first romantically linked.
After graduating from Loyola Marymount University in 1992, Jim went on to join Creative Artists Agency as both a talent agent and a partner.
He is on a number of high-end boards, including a Founding Board Member at Reese’s clothing company Draper James, a Member Board of Trustees at Matthew McConaughey’s nonprofit Just Keep Livin Foundation, and a Member Board of Trustees at Providence St Johns Medical Center Foundation.
Jim, 52, was previously on the Member Board of Directors at Heart of Los Angeles, an after-school program for children.
MARRIAGE STORY
On March 26, 2011, Reese and Jim tied the knot in Ojai, California.
The wedding took place at the Libbey Ranch – Reese’s former country estate, which has since been sold.
As mentioned, they share one son together, Tennessee James.
She shares two children with her former husband, Ryan Phillippe, as well; Ava Elizabeth and Deacon Reese.
For their 11th wedding anniversary, Reese shared a series of photos of her and Toth on Instagram, captioning the images: “Happy Anniversary JT!! 11 years of adventures, love & laughter. I feel so lucky to share this wonderful life with you.”
