BAFTA viewers outraged as The Crown fails to win ANY awards – despite cleaning up at other ceremonies

FANS of The Crown were left outraged when the popular show failed to win ANY awards at the BAFTA TV Awards 2021 on Sunday evening.

The Netflix drama, which has wiped the floor clean at other ceremonies, is loosely based on the recent history of the Royal Family, and drew in huge numbers for its fourth season last year.

The Crown was up for four gongs including Drama Series, Leading Actor, for Josh O’Conner as Prince Charles, Supporting Actor, for Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Supporting Actress, for Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

However, despite the numerous nominations, the series failed to secure a single win against the other major TV competitors at the awards.

Fans were left in shock at the decisions made by BAFTA, and took to social media to express their outrage that the programme was “snubbed”.

“Is it just me or is The Crown getting big snubbed at BAFTA TV awards?” one woman kicked off the debate on Twitter as Best Drama was announced.

Another quickly responded: “And how’s the Crown lost best drama? I thought it’s locked. Anyway BAFTA being BAFTA.”

A third added, criticising BAFTA: “Netflix’s The Crown’s misfortune era only in BAFTA yes ok bye.”

“And after 4 seasons, Vanessa Kirby remains as the only actress who has won a BAFTA for The Crown, playing a better version of Princess Margaret than the real one,” a fourth added.

Fans were equally in disbelief that Sweeney Todd actress Helena didn’t take the lead to win Best Supporting Actress, saying she was “robbed”.

One fan penned: “Helena Bonham Carter did not win the supporting actress” award? Okay bafta everyone knows she deserves the spot.”

“Helena Bonham Carter deserves better,” said a second, while a third chimed in: “Helena Bonham Carter was ROBBED!”

A fourth wrote: “How is Olivia Colman or Helena Bonham Carter not nominated for Best Leading Actress for The Crown?”

While it may have failed to secure any awards at the BAFTAs, the show has won a whole range of awards in recent years including the Golden Globes.

The Crown was also awarded at the American Film Institute Awards, The Critics’ Choice Awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The hit Netflix show has only ever taken home one BAFTA, for Vanessa Kirby’s portrayal of Princess Margaret in 2018, winning Supporting Actress.

Emma Corrin, who depicted Princess Diana in the latest series, was awarded Drama Series Actress of the year at the Golden Globes in March.

But she was “snubbed” at this year’s BAFTA ceremony and didn’t find her way onto the 2021 nominations list.

One fan took to Twitter to say it was a “literal joke” she had been missed off, while others were left “baffled” by the choices.

“Emma and Gillian [Anderson] not being nominated for any baftas after already sweeping award season so far its very odd,” one said.

Another added: “The fact that that baftas have Josh nominated but not Emma? They both gave outstanding performances.”

A third didn’t hold back, angrily penning: “Baftas you absolute embarrassments how r u gonna nominate Josh but not Emma.”

Among those who did scoop awards were Save Me Too for Drama Series, Paul Mescal of Normal People for Leading Actor and Malachi Kirby for Supporting Actor.

Rakie Ayola of drama Anthony beat Helena to claim the much-wanted Best Supporting Actress award, with I May Destroy You taking home Mini-Series.

First-time nominee Aimee Lou Wood scooped a gong for best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for Aimee Gibbs in Sex Education.

While Male Performance in a Comedy Programme was awarded to Charlie Cooper for his performance in This Country. 

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan – who was up for two comedy awards – took home the BAFTA for Entertainment Performance.

The Big Narstie Show won Comedy Entertainment Programme, Entertainment Programme awarded to Life & Rhymes and Scripted Comedy to Inside No 9.  

Adding to the list of winners, The School That Tried to End Racism was given the BAFTA for Reality & Constructed Factual, while Long Lost Family won the Features category.

They Saw the Sun First won the Short Form Programme, while Casualty scooped Soap & Continuing Drama for the fist time since 2018.

The Great House Giveaway won the brand new Daytime category, while News Coverage was awarded to Sky News’ Inside Idlib.

Once Upon a Time in Iraq received the BAFTA for Factual Series, as Current Affairs was presented to American’s War on Abortion, and International for Welcome to Chechnya: The Gay Purge.

Counting down the final winners, Locked In: Breaking the Silence (Storyville) won Single Documentary and The Surgeon’s Cut won Specialist Factual.

England V West Indies Test Cricket took home the Sport category, while best Live Event was given to Springwatch.

Virgin Media’s Must See Moment, the award voted for by the public, was scooped by the controversial Britain’s Got Talent moment when Diversity performed a Black Lives Matter inspired routine.
