Viewers woke up to Sally hosting the show with Beeb presenter Ben Thompson

Jon, 53, usually fronts BBC Breakfast alongside Sally Nugent, 51, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

However, the journalist has announced he’s taking two weeks off as he enjoys a holiday with his family.

Taking to his official Instagram last night, Jon told his followers not to expect him on the red sofa this morning.

He penned: “Enjoying some extra sleep and long planned annual leave with the family. So no need to set my alarm clock tomorrow.

“Back on the red sofa with my BBC Breakfast family in Salford in two weeks’ time.”

Viewers instead woke up to Sally hosting the show with Beeb presenter Ben Thompson.

During the show Sally jokingly addressed Jon’s break away, as they played a clip from Wimbledon that saw spectators being asked not to open champagne during part of a game.

“You know what I think that might have been our Jon Kay, who has just started his holidays,” she quipped.

“So if that was Jon – behave!”

Ben Thompson is a journalist who has worked for the BBC as New York and Middle East Correspondent.

Ben is best known for being on BBC Breakfast as well as having an extensive journalism career.

He first joined the BBC when he was still at university in 2001 when he worked at Radio Wales in Cardiff, working on the morning news programme Good Morning Wales.

Ben first joined BBC Breakfast in 2011 and is now a presenter as well as co-hosting Business Live, the BBC’s daily business programme.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
