During the programme a report was aired by Steve Nibbs as he covered the annual cheese roll at Brockworth, near Gloucester.

It sees competitors chase a 3kg Double Gloucester cheese wheel down a hill.

The report showed participants falling and tumbling as they took part in the extreme sport.

But BBC viewers were left in hysterics when the clip ended and Michael came back on screen.

Clearly bemused by the report, Michael felt the need to issue a clarification to viewers.

He simply said: “And of course cheese is also available in shops.”

The simple quip went down a treat with fans who couldn’t contain their laughter.

Taking to social media, one fan said: “Never seen a better accidental partridge in my LIFE.”

A second joked: “Shocked to find out you can buy cheese in shops.”

“Such an amazing response, just laughed out loud,” said a third.

While a fourth said: “My neighbours just heard me do the dorkiest laugh that segued into me choking on my lunch.”

Meanwhile, BBC News was recently hit by a technical blunder as a mortified host was forced to apologise.

One of the channel’s studios lights switch off during a bulletin plunging the studio into darkness.

It happened during this morning’s regional news bulletin on Look North, when the presenter opened the show as normal.
