It was then revealed in February that Anne Robinson would replace him, becoming the show’s first female host.

On Thursday, Nick’s co-star Rachel shared pictures of him to mark his last day of filming.

Rachel, 35, posted a number of pictures of Nick dressed up; one saw him wearing a brown wig, while another was a close up shot of him in a leopard print dressing gown wearing false eyelashes.

A third saw Nick standing with his arms out as he placed his face against the edge of a mirror on the makeup table, and a fourth was of him, Rachel and Susie Dent in the dressing room.

Another added: “You have been such a great team bringing pleasure into my home every afternoon. Nick is a true national treasure, will be sorely missed and a hard act to follow. Enjoy your retirement Nick. Onto a new era for Countdown with some trepidation.”
