The former Strictly star previously opened up about her struggles after losing Paul

Former Strictly star Debbie, 63, has revealed Paul broke down when he was told he only had months to live.

She said: “This cruel disease stripped him of everything within a few short weeks to the point where he collapsed on the bathroom floor and I held him as he wept and asked me what was happening.”

Detailing their final weeks together, Debbie told the Mirror: “Without hesitation I made arrangements for Paul to come home and to care for him myself at our home on the River Thames in Berkshire.

“We watched movies together and ate ice cream. Paul was never able to talk about his diagnosis but of course he knew he was dying.”

Despite Paul being told he had two months, Debbie previously said: “From diagnosis, he died four weeks and five days later, so there wasn’t time to think about what was happening.

“We just had to get on with the situation and look after him. It wasn’t until after he died, that the huge realisation kind of washed over me. I am out here, on this earth, on my own.”

Debbie, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, previously opened up about her struggles following Paul’s death.

She told the Daily Mail: “I didn’t want to get out of bed. I couldn’t make a cup of tea.

“Part of it must have been sheer physical exhaustion, but there was more to it. I changed. My brain had changed.

“I’ve always been the most optimistic person. If I’m feeling low I can look in the mirror and say ‘Come on, Debbie, let’s do this. Put on your make-up and smile.’ Suddenly I couldn’t.”

Debbie married Paul in April 1988, almost a decade since first meeting in 1979 when they worked together on his Great Yarmouth show.
