And Samantha Keeble revealed why she held such a grudge against the family

BBC One viewers were taken back decades as DCI Samantha Keeble’s (portrayed by Alison Newman) grudge against the Mitchells was finally explained.

DCI Keeble has been seen putting pressure on Phil Mitchell (played by Steve McFadden) and causing him a lot of trouble but recent episodes have hinted she may be have an ulterior motive to go after him.

The Walford bad guy was then shocked to find out she wanted information on Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), who only plays a small part in the criminal world.

As Phil asked her why she’d go after him, the present made way for the past to resurface.

'INCREDIBLE'

EastEnders fans say the same thing about Phil Mitchell in flashback episode

Last night’s drama-packed instalment was set in 1979 and included actress Jaime Winstone as late EastEnders icon Peggy Mitchell.

The matriarch was seen trying to keep her home and family afloat with her marriage to abusive husband Eric showing its first cracks.

Eric learned Phil wanted to work in a local garage, prompting him to take both his sons alongside Billy on a criminal job to show them his idea of a “work experience.”

The three lads embarked on a dodgy plan to steal VCR recorders from a warehouse with the help of a corrupt guard.

But the plan turned sour and a second security guard was killed by Eric, who had first asked Phil to do his dirty work.

The security guard was revealed to be DCI Keeble’s father and, although Eric is to blame, she’s taking her grief out on Billy.

As drama played out on their screens, viewers swarmed over to Twitter, demanding bosses bring them another flashback episode.

“What an EPISODE. The twists, the turns, the casting, the sassy comments and the punches thrown. Phenomenal from start to finish. Long live the Peggy Mitchell Supremacy”, one fan wrote.

“I would quite happily watch a series of this”, penned another as a third fan agreed: “Without any shadow of a doubt, that was one of the best EastEnders episodes I’ve ever seen!”

Another jumped in: “Absolutely loved that. My only minor complaint is that it should have been longer than 30 minutes. I really hope they do this with more iconic families in the future, it would be great to see.”

Others praised the line-up, most notably Daniel Delaney’s performance as a young Phil Mitchell.

“EastEnders have done a 70s flashback episode and they’ve somehow found the one teenager in the UK who looks like a young Phil Mitchell. Cannot believe what I’m seeing”, one soap fan tweeted.

Another commented: “The similarities though, young Phil and the actor playing young phil.. absolutely spot on.”
