Jamie, who plays Lola’s husband Jay, was by Lola’s side until the very end and told her that he hoped they’ll be reunited in another life before breaking down in tears.
Jamie paid tribute to his soap wife on Instagram, acknowledging Danielle’s hard work over the last few months.
Sharing a selection of photos of the pair of them behind the scenes, he said: “Tonight we said goodbye to Lola and what a journey myself and @danielle_harold have been on!
“Working together for all these years has been the best! She really is a special one!
“Danielle has worked so incredibly hard delivering Lola’s cancer storyline and deserves all her praise as does the whole cast and team for their efforts! Gonna miss ya at work kid love ya.”
In one of the photos the pair posed by the seaside as they filmed Lola’s final weeks.
Jamie and Isabella Brown, who plays their daughter Lexi Pearce, also grinned as they took a break between scenes.
Fans echoed what Jamie had said and congratulated the cast for such an emotive performance on the soap.
“You all broke me this week and today… you deserve every soap award. And I deserve for you to replace my box of tissues as I’ve run out from crying so much. You, Danielle, Isabella, Perry, Emma, Steve… I hope Hollywood offer you something for your performances. Phenomenal. And Isabella… that kid is the best soap kid ever,” one fan wrote.
“Just so we’ll acted by all of you. I’m a mess but as a nurse of palliative care patients you showed how a “good death” at home can be. Xx” another added.
After becoming more ill as the weeks went on, eventually, the fan-favourite character was desperately weak and became unresponsive.
The nurse let everyone know it was time for Lola’s loved ones to say their goodbyes as she had only hours left.
Her family, friends and neighbours all paid her a visit to say their final goodbyes.
Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Callum Highway (Tony Clay) went into Lola’s bedroom and say goodbye, promising to look after her daughter Lexi for her.
Meanwhile, other residents gathered in the Queen Vic pub and talked about their fond memories of Lola.
Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) battled with saying goodbye to Lola, as Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) also struggled with the situation.
Meanwhile, Lola’s 10-year-old daughter Lexi (Isabella Brown) wanted to make sure her mum has nails her favourite colour.
Jay told his wife that he hopes they will be reunited in another life before breaking down in tears.
Lola eventually breathed her last while she was embraced by Lexi and Jay.
