Tom's journey on The Apprentice in 2019 led to an unexpected encounter with the Italian Mafia. After impressing two American businessmen on the show, Tom was asked to sell bicycles on their behalf in Germany. Little did he know, the Italian gentleman he sold £1 million worth of stock to was connected to the mafia. Despite the revelation, Tom managed to keep his cool and even made a joke about it.

Before his rise to fame, Tom wasn't always on the right side of the law. He once bought a "magic key" from a local crook, allowing him to put £50 of electricity on pre-pay meters. He had no interest in being part of the show and couldn't imagine the production team coming down to film him at the crack of dawn in the market.

Tom's quick wit and banter have not only helped him in business but also in personal situations. During a romantic holiday in the Dominican Republic, he accidentally ran into Haiti gangsters. Instead of panicking, Tom used his charm and trading skills to strike a deal with the gangsters, trading his money for five cigars. Another one of Tom's business deals took a dangerous turn when he sold pots of face cream to a local gangster. Accused of selling knock-off products, Tom found himself in a pub surrounded by heavies who wanted their money back. With quick thinking and a bit of luck, Tom managed to prove the authenticity of the product and avoid any trouble.
