ITV viewers weren’t happy to be missing their news updates

Rather than their daily dose of morning news and debate, ITV viewers were greeted with Italy versus Argentina.

One person commented on Twitter: “Literally how many channels could you shunt the football on to? Who the hell wants to watch half of an Italian football match before work? This is ridiculous nonsense.”

Another said: “Seriously, football this time of the morning! I could understand if England was playing. News obviously isn’t important.”

A third asked: “Where is Good Morning Britain? Why would I want to watch Italy play football at 07.00am.”

A fourth said: “Seems football is more important than actual news.”

It’s likely to be a recurring theme throughout the day with Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women all off air.

England got off to a winning start in the tournament on Friday in a hard fought match against Haiti.

A penalty is all that separated the sides, but England bagged the important three points ahead of their second game against Denmark.

England goalscorer Georgia Stanway told BBC Sport after the match: “You know what, they challenged us.

“They were very dangerous on the counter-attack, so that’s something we’ll work on in training this week.

“Mary came up with a big save and everybody played their part. Moments like that are why she’s a top keeper. The most important thing is that we’ve got three points.

“The first penalty was a very, very good save, so credit for that but obviously she was off her line.

“I was tempted to change sides, but you’ve got to be confident in your strategy. There’s a process I go through and I stuck to that.

“We’ve been in camp for five or six weeks now, so it’s nice to get the first game out of the way.”
