Martin was hosting his Wallet Wednesday special of GMB when he opened up about the friction.

He had challenged viewers to solve a basic maths problem when co-presenter Susanna Reid asked why people can’t just use a calculator.

“First of all I have no problem with people saying they’re bad at maths,” said Martin.

“But I do have an issue with some presenters in the past who boasted about being bad at maths.”

Reassuring Susanna “it’s not you”, he added: “I won’t name and shame, but those who say ‘oh I’m terrible with maths’ – well you’d never hear them say ‘I’m terrible with reading’.

“For some reason we have this different social attitude to maths, than reading.”

Susanna interjected: “There’s nothing wrong with being bad at maths or bad at reading.”

“There’s something wrong with boasting like it’s a skill being bad at maths”, insisted Martin.

“It’s done as a badge of honour.”

“Maybe it’s just laughing it off, when people are slightly embarrassed about it,” suggested Susanna.

“Specific occasions when clever people on air who would never admit to a lack of knowledge about anything else, somehow find that it’s perfectly fine and socially acceptable to say ‘I’m terrible at maths’.

“But children are listening and it gives them an attitude that being bad at maths is absolutely fine and something you don’t need to think about, rather than saying ‘I really struggle at maths’, which is what you’d say if you were reading.”.

On a lighter note, Susanna was left in hysterics this morning when Martin made a very naughty sexual innuendo.

The host burst out laughing as straight-faced Martin delivered the early-morning gag on today’s show.

Money expert Martin had been testing viewers on their maths to celebrate national numeracy day,

Telling viewers they’d get the answer after the break, Susanna said: “We’ll bring you an update on whether it is better value – will you get more pizza – with your 15-inch for a tenner or two ten-inches for a tenner.”

Martin added: “Yes, which do you prefer? A 15-inch or two ten-inches?”

The racy joke had Susanna giggling on air before they threw to a commercial break.
