Susanna Reid opens up about her decision to go teetotal
Susanna Reid, co-host of Good Morning Britain, has shared the real reason behind her decision to quit alcohol after a visit to her doctor. The 53-year-old TV star gave up drinking five years ago and has experienced both mental and physical benefits as a result.
A doctor's visit prompts a life-changing decision
During a recent episode of the show, when asked by co-host Richard Madeley if her decision to quit booze was a New Year's resolution, Susanna revealed that it was actually due to advice she received from her doctor. According to her, giving up alcohol was recommended for the sake of her skin. She had been experiencing facial breakouts and a flushed appearance due to her alcohol consumption. This advice served as a strong motivator for Susanna to make the change.
"If you were told that giving up alcohol would improve your skin, that's a proper motivator," Susanna explained. "And after I gave up, if I had just one drink, I would instantly see it on my face. It became a strong deterrent."
The impact of sobriety on Susanna's appearance
Once an avid drinker, Susanna enjoyed white wine, prosecco, and vodka shots, but drew the line at red wine. While she has occasionally broken her abstinence, she has mostly stuck to her decision to go teetotal. After a year of sobriety, Susanna revealed that she had lost one-and-a-half stone in weight.
"I loved the pleasure of alcohol – the fizz of prosecco, the bubbles of champagne, the richness of Guinness, the decadence of spirits," Susanna said. "But each time I fell back into it, I regretted it. It either made me grouchy or took me days to recover."
By quitting alcohol, Susanna has experienced a positive transformation both internally and externally. Her decision serves as a reminder that sometimes a small change can lead to significant improvements in one's well-being.
