Freddie was filming a stunt for Top Gear and the car he was in was not fitted with airbags, The Celeb Report can reveal

A source told The Celeb Report: “The BBC has been keen to keep a lid on the extent of Freddie’s injuries for obvious reasons.

“The accident itself was far worse than anyone really realises — it’s hard to put into words, really; what he went through is simply unimaginable.

“But essentially the car turned over at speed, and Freddie — who also broke some ribs — understandably is traumatised by the whole thing.

“He’s been incredibly brave and stoical, and thankfully is getting stronger.

“He’s just taking things week by week.”

It comes after The Celeb Report revealed a catalogue of ‘failures’ by the BBC in the lead-up to the crash.

This included the fact that Freddie was not wearing a helmet, while the 130mph Morgan Super 3 sports car he was driving was not fitted with an airbag.

The popular presenter faced an agonising 45-minute wait for an air ambulance and no medical stretcher could be located for him.

The source added: “A very young producer, in their early twenties, effectively signed off on the whole stunt.

“Certain members of the crew just feel like insufficient checks and measures were made in the run-up.

“The sense is that some of the driving stunts were being done on the cheap in order to save money. Lessons have been learned.”

The Beeb — which has already publicly apologised to the ex-England cricket hero — conducted a full inquiry into the crash at the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey.  But the findings are being kept under wraps.

Earlier this week, The Celeb Report revealed that the future of the long-running cult car show “hangs in the balance”

Bulldozers have been seen at the famous aerodrome set to work on housing development.

Last month BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore revealed that filming for series 34 of Top Gear had been canned.

She said: “My priority at the moment is supporting Freddie through his  recovery so I think it would be really inappropriate for us to resume  filming now.”

She added: “I think we’ve got to talk about what Freddie wants to do.”
