HOLLYOAKS star Owen Warner has opened up about his mother Polly's health battle and the urgent need for a heart transplant. The 24-year-old actor shared that Polly, 57, was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition at just 18 months old and recently went into heart failure. Polly has been living with Ventricular Tachycardia all her life, managing her heart rhythm with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) since the age of 40. Despite multiple procedures, her symptoms have worsened, and doctors have advised a heart transplant within two years.
A lifetime of challenges
Throughout her life, Polly has faced numerous health challenges related to her heart condition. She underwent her first invasive heart surgery at the age of 11. While she was monitored by doctors until the age of 34, she was eventually admitted to the hospital with heart failure. Although she has undergone two more procedures since then, her symptoms have continued to worsen, leading to the urgent need for a heart transplant.
A fighter with a lot on the line
Reflecting on her journey, Polly shared, "When I was just 34 years old with my hands full with three young boys, I developed a cough and became very breathless. Eventually, my symptoms became so intense that I was finally diagnosed with heart failure. Fortunately, the medications started working and I began improving. I was young and had three boys – a lot to fight for."
Owen expressed the impact of his mother's health struggles on their family, saying, "Nothing makes you step back and look at things more than somebody in your family having problems with their health. Our mum means so much to us, she’s the heart of the family, so the news we’ve had over this past year has been really hard to hear."
Raising funds for heart research
Owen's brother Jake, 27, will be running the Goodwood Marathon this Sunday to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. This initiative aims to support research and help individuals like their mother, who are in need of life-saving procedures.
Understanding Ventricular Tachycardia
Ventricular Tachycardia is a heart condition that occurs when the electric signals in the heart originate in a different place and follow a different pathway through the heart. This can result in the heart not having enough time to fill with blood before pumping. For some individuals, this can lead to a drop in blood pressure, fainting, or even cardiac arrest. Others may not experience these symptoms, and their blood pressure remains stable.
