Grand Designs’ infamous ‘saddest ever’ home

Grand Designs star Kevin McCloud has shared a rare update on the show's infamous 'saddest ever' home, after the owner was left in millions of pounds of debt. Edward Short and his wife Hazel appeared on Grand Designs in 2019 with plans to refurbish a nearly derelict clifftop mansion in North Devon. However, the property has faced setbacks and financial difficulties, earning its reputation as the show's 'saddest ever' project.

The toll of the decade-long renovation

Kevin McCloud caught up with Edward Short last year to see the completion of the renovations on the clifftop mansion. However, the decade of work took a toll on Edward's family and his relationship with his then-wife Hazel, leading to their separation. The ambitious renovation and building project left Edward in debt of £7 million.

Plans to sell the property

Faced with mounting debts, Edward had no option but to sell the property. He initially asked for £10 million, which would have cleared his debts and allowed him to purchase a new family home. However, no buyers were offering close to that price, prompting the decision to split the property into two listings earlier this year. Kevin believes that this move might make it more appealing to potential buyers.

An update on the sale

In a recent interview, Kevin shared an update on the sale of the property. He revealed that he still communicates with Edward occasionally and that the property is still on the market. Although Kevin hasn't checked in with Edward recently, he hopes that a buyer will show interest soon.

The admiration for Edward's handling of the situation

Kevin previously expressed his admiration for the way Edward handled the difficult situation. He commended Edward for his humility and willingness to admit his failings in front of a large audience. Despite his emotional connection with Edward and his family, Kevin emphasized that he maintains a professional distance to fulfill his role as a TV host.

Grand Designs continues to thrive

Meanwhile, Kevin McCloud continues to host a new season of Grand Designs, which is now in its 25th year. He expressed his surprise and gratitude for the show's continued success and the diversity of projects showcased on the program.

Grand Designs airs on Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
