THE Masked Singer star Aled Jones has shared backstage secrets including how they protected his identity beneath his Traffic Cone costume.
Lifting the lid on 2022’s most talked about TV show, singer and TV presenter Aled, 51, said bosses were super strict on security.
Speaking after his exit on Saturday night, Aled told The Celeb Report he barely saw or spoke to anyone directly involved in the production.
He said: “Basically, you turn up with your balaclava and visor on and gloves and hoodie and you don’t see anybody for the whole day except your vocal coach, who I loved working with.
“You don’t see anyone (backstage) everyone has their separate dressing room, everyone has a separate dressing area as well.
“So the only time I ever saw any of the other creatures was when we did the group song and that was for a very short time.”
He added about his 7ft tall Traffic Cone costume: “I loved the big shoes, they are basically massive shoes that are moulded around crocs.
“The tricky thing was you couldn’t really see your feet so it was very difficult to see where you were walking.
“You can’t really see that much at all, which was a godsend because I knew a lot of the crew working on (the show) and I had to always be quiet and not give the game away.”
The singer started his career as a soprano when he was a boy crooning Walking In The Air.
But he has also sung as a tenor and a baritone – one of the deepest voices.
Aled told The Celeb Report he tried his best to disguise his voice each week but at times “nerves” got the better of him.
He said: “It wasn’t really about singing for me, it was more about trying not to be me.
“Which was tricky especially in the Toy Story song because I did sound like me unfortunately.
“I don’t know if it was nerves or whatever got to me because in the rehearsals I very much tried to put all the croak in my voice, but then when it came to it I just sounded like a Welsh Aled Jones!”
Other clues that Aled was the Traffic Cone included the word Believe – the name of one of his songs – printed on the side of the character.
He admitted some family members pegged him as Traffic Cone early on but he’d always deny he had any involvement – even claiming he hadn’t heard of the show.
He said: “People guessed it in the second week, I got calls and texts saying ‘oh it’s you, oh it’s you’ but I laughed it off.”
After the dramatic unmasking of Aled as Traffic Cone and Michelle Williams as Rockhopper, viewers of The Masked Singer can’t wait for the final.
Mushroom, Panda and Robunny are the remaining characters who will battle it out to win the 2022 series.
Aled said he has an inkling who will triumph in the ITV competition.
He told us: “I think Panda might win because I think Panda’s got the cute element.
“And I remember being backstage once because you don’t really see anybody else on it at all.
“So I remember hearing Panda go on and everyone in the audience went, ‘awww’, and I thought ‘ah that’s probably it.'”
