Emmerdale's Laura Norton and Mark Jordan, who played Kerry Wyatt and Daz Spencer on the show, are set to feature in a documentary on Channel 4 to shed light on their children's rare genetic disorder. Both of their kids have been diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a condition that affects both hearing and vision in young children. The couple has chosen to share their story and hopes to raise awareness and find a cure for this condition.
A shocking diagnosis
Laura, 40, and Mark, 58, are parents to Jesse, two, and Ronnie, who is nearly one. They initially kept the diagnosis private, but they are now dedicated to advocating for others who have children with the same condition. The couple has invited cameras into their lives to document their journey and promote awareness about Usher syndrome.
Raising awareness and funds
Over the weekend, Laura and Mark organized a charity ball to raise both money and awareness for Usher syndrome. They were supported by their celebrity friends, including Amy Walsh, Samantha Giles, and Tina O'Brien, who attended the event. The couple is passionate about making a difference and helping those who are affected by this condition.
A heartbreaking discovery
When speaking to Hello! magazine, Laura and Mark shared their experience of discovering their children's condition. Laura mentioned that her intuition alerted her that something was wrong with her kids. They took Jesse and Ronnie for testing, and it was revealed that both Laura and Mark carried the gene that causes Usher syndrome, which would eventually lead to their children losing their sight.
A future without a cure
Usher syndrome comes in three types, with varying severity in terms of the disease progression and how soon hearing and sight are lost. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Usher syndrome. Laura and Mark have experienced the emotional impact of knowing that their children will gradually lose their sight but remain committed to raising awareness and supporting others affected by this condition.
