Today marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the NHS.
Five years ago doctors made the decision to help Richard battle a lung infection, and was told he could have died if they hadn’t intervened so quickly.
This morning Richard took to Twitter to mark five years since it all happened.
Sharing a picture of him lying in a hospital bed, Richard said: Thanks for everything you did for me 5 years ago today NHS.
“Thanks to the 40 people at Lewisham who saved me.
“Especially my consultant Vic Happy 75th. Couldn’t do it* without you (*Live) The NHS treats more than a million people a day. We’ve all got our stories.”
Fans replied to his tweet with love and support.
One said: “Thank god, and very proud of the NHS & Lewisham who saved you!”
“The NHS has great people,” another chimed in.
Richard later revealed he couldn’t eat or sleep properly and was having counselling to overcome the “psychological scars” of being in a coma for 11 days.
The telly star was left suffering hallucinations, panic attacks and paralysis after being put under.
Richard told BBC Radio 5 Live listeners he was struggling with his mental health following the scare.
He said: “As the therapist explained, I’m still in the thick of it. I can’t eat properly, I don’t sleep properly. The infection is completely gone but the psychological scars need dealing with. They were struggling to get me under, they had to use so many different needles. They paralysed me.
“One of the drugs they use to put you under is hallucinogenic and you take in things. You can hear conversations in a coma and start to piece together a story. There were things I could remember that were accurate and then things that were nonsense – my brain stitched together a new reality.”
He had just 20 minutes to tell his loved ones that he was being put into a coma.
Richard added: “The consultant walked in and said, ‘it’s much worse, I’ve looked at the x-ray, it’s horrible. If I don’t put you in a coma for a least a week, you’re going to die. It was the most shocking moment of my life. I nearly died the first two nights, I didn’t know at the time.
“The hospital thought I would die the first night and the second night. My blood oxgen levels went to 70 per cent, if you get less than that you get brain damage and die. The infection was winning. They kept saying to Rebecca, ‘he is very ill’. I had 250 injections.”
He woke up in a confused state, and in a confused state started to lash out at doctors.
He was restrained and they put him back under for his own safety.
Richard added: “Rebecca had to put kids to bed so I woke up surrounded by strangers. I was kicking off to point they had to restrain me, was confused and frightened.
“In the end they put me back under and brought me back out two days later.”
Richard shot to fame in the 90s.
He started his career on Blue Peter and is now a guest presenter on Good Morning Britain.
The star tied the knot with Rebecca McFarlane in 2008.
They share two kids Arthur and Ivy.
