RIDLEY Road viewers were left reeling after the premiere episode of the new BBC drama.
Ridley Road follows the story of a young Jewish woman named Vivien Epstein played by Agnes O’Casey.
It shows her journey as she goes undercover inside a fascist organisation in the 1960s.
The first episode showed the raw reality of anti-Semitism that was sparked by the neo-Nazi party in 1960s London.
In the swinging sixties, the Jewish community was a growing group in the Dalston area of East London.
After the end of World War Two, neo-Nazis decided to move in and harass the Jewish residents by hosting intimidating rallies in an attempt to bring chaos and disorder.
The show has already evoked strong emotions within viewers as well as shedding a light on a traumatic historical event.
Viewers could not believe what they were seeing and were shocked to learn the story was based on real events.
“My word, Ridley Road on BBC1 is outstanding. Brutal, but brilliant,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
Another added: “B***dy hell, #ridleyroad is disturbing… shall definitely be watching the rest, fascinated and horrified at the same time.”
And a third wrote: “Uncomfortable, disturbing, evocative. Everything high-quality drama should be.”
The cast includes some impressive, familiar faces such as ex-EastEnders stars: Tracy-Ann Oberman acting as Nancy Malinovsky and Tamzin Outhwaite starring as Barbara Watson.
Rory Kinnear appears in the show as far-right movement leader Colin Jordan alongside Eddie Marsan who will portrays Soly Malinovsky.
The new drama was written by Sarah Solemani as a screen adaptation of Jo Bloom’s novel of the same name.
Ridley Road airs for four episodes on BBC One, Sundays at 9pm until October 24.
Episodes will also be available on the BBC iPlayer.
