"Hell" on the Cobbles: Simon Gregson Reflects on Early Years

Simon Gregson, known for his role as Steve McDonald on Coronation Street, has revealed that his first decade on the soap was a difficult time. Gregson joined the show in 1989 at the age of 15 and admits that his character wasn't well-liked during those early years. While he now enjoys playing the part, he acknowledges that the challenges of being on the show lessen as time goes by.

Surviving the Pressure: Overcoming Personal Struggles

Speaking on the show Living With Lucy, Gregson opened up about the toll that his early years on Coronation Street took on his mental health. He admitted to being a worrier and experiencing self-doubt and self-hatred during that time. However, he had a realization that worrying wouldn't benefit him in the long run and decided to let go of those negative thoughts.

Dealing with Jealousy and Preconceptions

In a separate interview on the podcast Tis Yourself, Gregson discussed the abuse he received from people his own age when he first gained fame. He explained that jealousy and preconceived notions led others to assume he was arrogant and showy. As a result, he felt the need to prove that he was just a normal person. It wasn't until his late 30s that he stopped caring about others' opinions.

Longevity on the Cobbles: A Humble Perspective

Despite being one of Coronation Street's longest-running stars, Gregson avoids using the term "famous" to describe himself. He once used the word on Twitter and faced backlash from fans who felt it was inappropriate. Gregson recognizes the show's global success and popularity, but chooses not to label himself with such a grandiose term.

A Mother's Worry: Job Insecurity after 34 Years

Even after 34 years on the show, Gregson's mother still worries about his job security. She advises him not to "rock the boat" and reminds him that his time on the show could come to an end at any moment. Gregson jokes about her concerns, but acknowledges that in the world of television, it only takes one producer's decision to change everything.
