Krishnan Guru-Murthy, the renowned lead anchor of Channel 4 news, is gearing up for his biggest challenge to date. He has recently signed up to compete on the hit show Strictly Come Dancing. However, he may face difficulties in his training due to a heart condition.
A Genetic Heart Condition
At the age of 53, Krishnan Guru-Murthy suffers from a genetic heart condition known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which tragically claimed the lives of two of his cousins. Despite the potential risks involved, Guru-Murthy was determined to participate in the intense ballroom competition before it becomes physically impossible for him to do so.
A Heart-Stopping Concern
Guru-Murthy openly expressed his concerns about the impact his heart condition may have during the competition. While he received reassurance from his cardiologist that he would not drop dead live on BBC One, there are still uncertainties. He must be cautious about pushing his heart rate into the danger zone, as it can prove fatal for individuals with his condition.
Seizing the Opportunity
The renowned Channel 4 star also revealed that television executives have approached him numerous times throughout his career to participate in talent competitions. However, now seemed to be the perfect time for Guru-Murthy. His wife, Lisa, even gave her blessing for him to join the long-running BBC show.
A Race Against Time
Guru-Murthy explained that Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy thickens the muscle walls of the heart, potentially leading to cardiac arrest. He contemplated the consequences of repeatedly declining opportunities to participate in these types of shows, realizing that it might not be physically achievable for him to do so in the future, and certainly not in five years' time.
