Strictly fans back Amanda Abbington as she’s cast in new series

STRICTLY fans have defended Amanda Abbington after trolls hit out at her signing.

The 49-year-old appeared on The One Show last night to confirm the news, three months after we exclusively revealed she was in talks with show bosses.

But a small number of viewers vented on social media after it was revealed Amanda would be part of the 2023 line-up.

It’s after the actress received backlash in March over a tweet, which some claimed was “transphobic”.

While others praised Amanda joining the BBC show, saying: “Oh wowwwww, now I sure will be watching!”

Another said: “Fantastic! I might watch it this year as she is on. Good Luck Amanda.”

Some Strictly Come Dancing took to Twitter to complain about Amanda being on the new series, because of her previous comments.

Amanda was reacting to footage from a Caba Baba Rave, described as a baby sensory and cabaret show for parents and their babies aged 0-2 years old.

Video of the rave emerged online showing a person dancing in boots and a bondage harness.

The star tweeted that the show was “not for babies” continuing “if you think it is, there is something fundamentally wrong with you”.

One person said: “I didn’t know who Amanda Abbington is, so I just googled her.

“And now I’m hoping the next few reveals will include a trans woman and a drag queen.”

While another tweeted: “I had no idea of her views, and if I did I wouldn’t have commented on her being confirmed for Strictly.”

The Celeb Report has approached Amanda’s representative for a comment

It came after she said that parents taking children to a drag queen show was “abhorrent”.

After scrutiny from Twitter users, Amanda responded to accusations of transphobia: “I never mentioned the trans community!

“How on earth is my post transphobic.

“It never entered my head that the video I posted is transphobic. I won’t be called that I’m afraid, I’m sorry.

“I’m saying you do not perform that kind of act in front of BABIES. It’s abhorrent.”

Meanwhile, after it was revealed the actress was part of the Strictly 2023 line-up, Amanda said: “I’m thrilled to have been asked to do Strictly.

“I’m actually really shy and self-conscious so this will be a great opportunity for me to overcome those things!

“Plus, I get to learn to dance which I am incredibly excited about. I’m really looking forward to the training too, I’m quite competitive as my family and friends will tell you. I can’t wait to start!”

Amanda split with 51-year-old actor Martin Freeman — father of her two children — in 2016.

She started a romance with escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, 42, who was left paralysed in 2021 after a stunt on America’s Got Talent: Extreme went wrong.

Amanda played Mary Morstan in BBC1’s Sherlock from 2014 to 2017.

She was the on-screen wife of Martin’s Dr Watson, sidekick of supersleuth Sherlock Holmes, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

She had expressed her desire to join Strictly as early as 2010, despite a general reluctance to appear on reality TV.

She said: “The only thing I’d love to do is Strictly Come Dancing.

“I love the idea of learning something.”

She joked: “This is an official application.

“But I’m sure me being on it would be its downfall.

“The curse of Amanda Abbington strikes again!”
