Cobra Kai – Netflix

Cobra Kai is back for its fifth season

Turning an iconic 80s film franchise into a TV series is a risky business. If it works, high-fives all round. If it doesn’t, not only do you have a flop on your hands, chances are you’ve also sullied the memory of a much-loved movie.

Fortunately, when the first season of Cobra Kai appeared on YouTube back in 2018, this enjoyably over-the-top reboot of the Karate Kid films was a slow-burning hit. And now, with the hotly-anticipated fifth season landing this week, it’s grown into one of Netflix’s most popular shows.

Much of its success is thanks to the way it reintroduces us to fondly-remembered characters – namely bitter rivals Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) – more than 30 years after we last saw them high-kicking their way across the big screen. When we rejoin them in season one, Johnny is down on his luck, battling alcoholism and depression. A decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo gives him a new focus and brings Daniel back into his life. But when Daniel starts to worry that Johnny will train a new generation of bullies at Cobra Kai, he attempts to force its closure.

Over the next few series, the pair’s rivalry changes, there’s new characters and the return of more familiar faces, including original bad guy mentor John Kreese (Martin Kove). Season five promises more of the same, with The Karate Kid 2’s Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) rejoining the action.

As Daniel’s legendary old sensei, the much missed My Miyagi used to say: “Balance is key.” True to that spirit, Cobra Kai is a perfectly balanced mix of drama, comedy, nostalgia and new characters.

Seasons 1-4 are available now, season 5 starts Friday
