The burning questions Trigger Point needs to answer after season premiere’s cliffhanger ending

TRIGGER Point made its eagerly anticipated and explosive debut on Sunday night – and viewers were teased with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger.

The six-part series – Jed Mercurio’s first since Line of Duty last year – looks to give viewers an insight into the heart-stopping world of counter-terrorism policing.

Trigger Point made its eagerly anticipated and explosive debut on Sunday night

Viewers were teased with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger in the first episode

And the first episode of unrelenting tension was exactly what we’ve come to expect from any series that Mercurio is involved in.

Soon into the first episode, Vicky McClure’s character – named Lana ‘Wash’ Washington – is seen consoling a civilian with an explosive vest attached to him.

Able to disarm the situation, as well as the device, things soon took a sinister turn as a car bomb unexpectedly detonated minutes later – leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.

With that said, we take a look at the top three questions that need to be answered after the first instalment of the series.

Who survived the explosion?

A devastating bomb exploded at the end of the first episode

The first episode ended on a truly devastating note that has got all viewers talking.

Joel Nutkins realised that a van parked in the vicinity of the crime scene had been rigged with an explosive.

The sudden detonation killed him instantly, with longtime partner Lana finding his arm among the debris – instantly recognisable due to his distinctive tattoo.

She was also caught in the blast, however, she escaped with her life, while we also know that her colleague and love interest Thom Youngblood is among the survivors.

Questions remain, though, over whether all of the Metropolitan Police operatives on the scene got away unscathed.

It also seems certain that a number of innocent civilians perished in the attack.

Who is responsible for the attacks?

An organised terror cell is believed to be behind the attack

The key focus for the series is likely to be finding out who is orchestrating the attacks.

The wife of victim Andy Phelan noted that their attackers were talking a mixture of English and Arabic, which led officers on the scene to wonder if this could be the work of an Islamic extremist group.

However, something that sets this case apart is that the culprits are clearly equipped with sophisticated technology.

Incredibly, they were able to bypass the police’s mobile phone signal jammers, as well as interfere with the bomb disposal robot.

Later on, it was noted that the attempted activation of a bomb vest was carried out by two unregistered burner phones in separate locations, suggesting the formation of an organised terror cell.

What are their motives?

Police corruption could be one of the elements at play in Trigger Point

Currently, we have very little to go on so far which means the matter is entirely open to speculation.

Given that the creator of Line of Duty is one of the key players behind-the-scenes, we can’t rule out that police corruption could be one of the elements at play in Trigger Point.

As previously mentioned, the unknown terror cell responsible for the attacks in this episode are seemingly equipped with sophisticated technology.

Could this mean that it’s possible that they could be smuggling resources from the Met’s own supply?

Trigger Point continues next Sunday on ITV at 9pm.
