MARTIN Freeman is back on the box with his new big crime show, The Responder – but there was one thing that REALLY got viewers talking tonight.
The series follows an unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool.
The Responder is based on true events as it is about the life of ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, who is also the writer for the series.
The six-part series follows Chris (Martin), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer.
The show focuses on him tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool.
But it was Martin’s “spot on” Liverpool accent that got viewers really talking.
One wrote: “Fair play to Martin Freeman. 5 mins in and that’s a more than acceptable accent.”
While another said: “Martin Freeman’s scouse accent is spot on. Non native accents usually give me itchy teeth but this was seriously impressive.”
This one commented: “Well Martin Freeman, the accent is amazing – I’m impressed.”
Speaking about the role, Martin told the BBC: “When Laurence Bowen first sent me the scripts he was very excited and after reading the first few pages, and I felt this was really something else.
“It wasn’t a drama that was written by committee, it was unfiltered Tony Schumacher, and I really liked that he put whatever he wanted on the page.
“Tony has been writing for a long time but the fact that this is his first television drama means he is far from having gotten into a comfortable groove or formulaic.
“He just put on the page whatever the hell he thought needed to be there and that is really exciting.”
The Responder was first announced back in February 2020, but filming was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic..
