FANS of Emmerdale in the 90s will remember tough businessman Frank Tate, owner of the famous Home Farm.

But despite not being on the show since 1997, the character’s legacy still remains important to the plot in the ITV soap in 2023.

Who played Frank Tate in Emmerdale?

The Emmerdale character of Frank Tate was played by actor Norman Bowler.

He joined the soap in 1989, as the patriarch of the Tate family.

During his time on the show, Frank suffered multiple heart attacks, was married to Kim Tate, was framed for murder, and struggled to deal with his daughter Zoe’s sexuality.

The character eventually died in 1997 from a heart attack, while his wife Kim watched on.

In 2023, Frank became part of Emmerdale’s storyline again from beyond the grave.

It was after it was revealed that Faith Dingle had a love child with him, and Frank was the father of her son Caleb Dingle.

What else has Norman Bowler been in?

Born in London on August 1, 1932, Norman Bowler kicked off his career as an actor in the 50s as a regular on the ATV soap, Harpers West One.

His other TV credits include starring in The Avengers in 1967, and appearing alongside actor James Caan in the 1968 war film Submarine X-1.

From 1966 to 1976, Norman played Detective Chief Inspector Harry Hawkins for the entire run of the BBC police drama Softly, Softly.

Another big role for the actor was when he appeared in Crossroads in the 80s.

Norman retired from acting in 2002.

Is Norman Bowler married and does he have any children?

Norman became a member of the famous 1950s Soho Set, and it was during this time that he met his first wife Henrietta Moraes.

During their time together they had two children, Joshua and Caroline – although many years later it transpired that his son had a different father.

Norman and Henrietta divorced in 1956, and he went onto marry his second wife, Berjourhi Bowler, and have a daughter called Tamara.

The couple divorced in 1969, after 10 years of marriage.

The actor’s third wife Dianne died in December 2012.
