IT’S THE news all Derry Girls fans never wanted to hear – the show is coming to an end.
The show has been a HUGE success for Channel 4, leaving viewers wondering why season 3 will be the last series.
Why is Derry Girls ending?
The reason for Derry Girls coming to an end, is quite simply because the show is about teenage girls, but as they are now getting older, the story has become redundant.
The show’s creator, Lisa McGee announced back in 2021 that the third season will be the final, and explained this was the reason.
Posting on Twitter, she said: “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series.
“Derry Girls is a coming-of-age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phrase – which was a small, magical window of time.
More on Derry Girls
“Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will forever be proud of everything it’s achieved. I’d like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for getting behind us.
“Thanks also to the team behind the series, the incredible Hat Trick productions and a special thanks to Channel 4 – the channel I grew up watching, the channel that made me want to write comedy and the only channel that could have made our show.”
What have the cast said about the end of Derry Girls?
Fans will be delighted to discover Jamie-Lee O’Donnell returns to our screens as the iconic Michelle Mallon.
Nicola Coughlan, who also appeared in Bridgerton, reprises her role as Clare Devlin.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson is back as Erin Quinn alongside her cousin Orla McCool who is played by Louisa Harland.
Speaking about the show ending to comedy.co.uk, Louisa said: Towards the end it was like, ‘Oh, this is the last day we’re going to be in the uniform,’ and, ‘This is the last time filming with the family,’ or, ‘This is the last time in Erin’s bedroom.’ There are lots of those emotions.
Nicola added: “It was definitely bittersweet. It’s sad to think that we’ll never play these characters again, but at the same time you want to send it off in the right way, on a high.”
Saoirse commented: “It’s really bittersweet. I think the journey that I’ve been on with Erin, especially on the third series, feels like a really nice place to leave this series.”
When does the last season air on Channel 4?

The first episode will premiere on Channel 4 at 9.15pm with six episodes in total, all running on Tuesday nights.
